The library is located on the first floor of the main building, 1249 F Street. Remember to bring your NSAD ID Card when visiting the library. 

MISSION

The mission of the Richard Welsh Library is to support the teaching and research needs of the faculty, students and alumni of the NewSchool of Architecture and Design.

LEARNING OUTCOMES

  • Library users will be able to recognize when information is needed.
  • Library users will be able to effectively locate library resources.
  • Library users will be able to critically evaluate information sources.
  • Library users will be able to use information ethically and legally.
  • Library users will demonstrate the information skills necessary to be lifelong learners.
     

ACCESS

1. The Richard Welch library at NSAD provides library services to students, faculty, staff and alumni. All new library users must arrange with library staff to have an introductory tour. Library staff may ask to see your student ID whenever you are in the library, so please keep it safe.
The library is open 10am to 9pm Monday to Thursday, 10am to 6:30pm Friday, 11:00am to 3:00pm Saturday and 12:00pm to 6:00pm Sunday.

The library is closed on the following holidays:

  • New Years Day
  • Martin Luther King, Jr. Day
  • Presidentís Day
  • Memorial Day
  • Independence Day
  • Labor Day
  • Veterans Day
  • Thanksgiving Day and the day following
  • Christmas Day

In addition, the library may be closed over school breaks. Students and faculty will receive notification of library closures via email.

Disabled Access and Special Requirements: The library is accessible for disabled persons. You may wish to phone ahead if you require assistance. We are always ready to consider ways in which we can best serve any library users. Please do not hesitate to discuss with library staff.

USING THE LIBRARY COLLECTION

The library collection can be searched using the catalog.

Books

Over 15,000 books in all subjects taught at the NewSchool of Architecture and Design are available on the open shelves. The collection also includes reference books and a reserve collection. Over 500 new books are added to the collection each year. Library users are encouraged to suggest new books for purchase. This may be done by contacting a member of library staff, filling in a recommendation form. Books are shelved by call number using the Dewey Decimal system.

Periodicals

The Library holds 45 current periodicals in the fields of architecture, landscape architecture and design. Periodicals are reference only.

Audio Visual Materials

The Libraryís collection of audio visual materials (VHS, DVD, CD) numbers over 200 items and continues to grow. The collection can be searched through Athena.

Electronic Resources

The periodicals collection is enhanced by two full-text databases JSTOR Arts and Sciences III and Academic Search Complete, which includes magazines and academic journals on the social sciences, humanities, and sciences.

  • Arts & Sciences III includes journals in languages and literature, as well as essential titles in the fields of music, film studies, folklore, performing arts, religion, and the history and study of art and architecture.*

EBSCO

  • Academic Search Complete - A comprehensive multidisciplinary database with more than 8,500 full-text periodicals
  • Avery Index to Architectural Periodicals  - Provides references to articles in architecture and design periodicals from the U.S., Europe, Asia, and Latin America 
  • Art and Architecture Complete - Full text coverage of 380 periodicals and 220 books, with a collection of over 63,000 images.
  • GreenFILE - Indexes publications on such topics as global warming, green building, pollution, renewable energy, etc.

BuildingGreen Suite - The leading online resource for information on sustainable buildings, including designs, materials and case studies.

Subject Guides

BORROWING

Members of the NSAD community (students, faculty, staff and alumni) are granted the following borrowing rights:

  • Open Shelf books: 3 weeks
  • Popular and/ or new books : 2 weeks
  • Reference books: 2 hours
  • Reserve books: 2 hours
  • Audio Visual resources: 3 days

Late fines are charged at $0.25 per day, $0.25 per hour for reference and reserve items. Faculty are not charged overdue fines.
