Bachelor of Landscape Architecture

Landscape architecture is a diverse profession that engages the intersection and complexity of interrelationships between environmental and social conditions. It is the making of built environments that respond to human needs while preserving the natural systems and habitats that support life on the planet. Every day, we experience the environmental and social benefits of landscape architecture in our communities. From the public park to the community garden, urban street, reclaimed brownfield site, or nature reserve, landscape architects are involved in the making and preservation of the built and natural environment.

New School of Architecture and Design’s (NSAD) Bachelor of Landscape Architecture program focuses on sustainable urban environments and the landscape issues that relate directly to how we inhabit cities and how landscape architecture can enhance that habitation. This emphasis includes designing and advocating for public spaces, creating new understandings of the ecology of the city, and seeing the relationships between the urban core and the larger landscape that supports it. As a city located next to the ocean in an arid climate, San Diego is a particularly appropriate place to study landscape architecture and the concerns of coastal environments and urban water issues.

Through design studios and professional courses, students in the Bachelor of Landscape Architecture undergraduate program develop technical skills in digital technologies, site engineering, and landscape construction practices. This landscape architecture skill set is grounded in coursework that helps students learn to think critically, act insightfully, and communicate complicated ideas using a variety of media. Our objective is to prepare students who are able to address the complex architectural conditions created by a rapidly urbanizing world as well as the resulting fragmentation of ecological systems and increased pressure on natural resources. We believe that landscape architects can be significant participants in determining the future well-being of the planet.

Thank you for your interest in our landscape architecture program. We look forward to hearing from you!
