NEA Report Predicts Growth in Architecture Jobs
8/24/2011

Job growth for architects expected to grow faster than the average rate

Thinking about becoming an architect? You could be in high demand in upcoming years. A new report by the National Endowment for the Arts details how landscape architects have among the highest projected job growth rates among artist-related occupations.  Job growth for general architects is also expected to expand at a faster-than-average rate, according to the report, while growth in the graphic arts field is expected to continue at an average rate. The NEA jobs report, based on 2008-2018 data and projections from the Bureau of Labor Statistics, includes the following employment highlights:

  • Job opportunities for landscape architects are expected to increase 20 percent  from 2008 employment figures.
  • Graphic designers will also benefit as the demand for Internet advertising and online media campaigns increases. The number of graphic designer jobs from 2008 to 2018 is expected to increase 13 percent, according to data collected by the NEA.
  • Job growth for architects (excluding naval and landscape architects) is expected to rise 16 percent, driven by a combination of demands for work in the healthcare industry and environmental trends towards “green” or sustainable design.

The NEA jobs report notes that those who work in artistic fields - such as architects, actors and museum curators -  fall within a Bureau of Labor Statistic category which typically require high levels of education and specialized training.
