Taking a Chance on Art

Tara AveryTara Avery is thrilled to be pursuing her passion for art at NewSchool—despite her initial hesitation about doing so. The second-year Digital Media Arts student had previously earned a bachelor’s degree in real estate and says, “I never cared much for real estate but I did get that degree because I always thought an ‘artistic’ degree wouldn’t be a lucrative endeavor.”

Yet she took a risk and applied to NewSchool, even though she was concerned about not being accepted because she didn’t have an extensive portfolio or a design-based education. Today, Avery, who anticipates graduating by next summer, says, “Since starting at NewSchool, I am happier than I ever was studying real estate. I am excited to find a career that makes me happy every single day.”

She chose NewSchool because of the smaller class sizes of the Digital Media Arts program and the fact that she could tailor her education to fit her career goals. “The faculty in our department is amazing and so far, I have learned more than I could have imagined,” she notes.

Avery’s focus is Design and Visualization. “I enjoy print media and graphic design, but I am in love with digital production and interactive media,” she explains. “I have always wanted to work as a designer or art director for a company that builds sets and produces visual performance for touring musicians.  Check out Amon Tobin's ISAM tour or Nine Inch Nails’ “Lights in the Sky” tour. That is exactly what I want to do some day.”

To reach her goals, she plans to find an internship in Los Angeles later this year or early next year and then move there after graduation to find a position with a visual production company.  “I've got my eye on a couple places in particular,” she adds, “but for now, that's a secret!”

As a student at NewSchool, Avery says that she has been surprised by the way that advancements in technology have expanded the parameters of the design world. “One thing in particular that I'm learning right now is creating photorealistic renderings in 3D Studio Max. The things people are able to create with that program blow me away.”

Avery offers sound advice for prospective NewSchool students. “Anyone who will succeed here needs to be creative, ambitious, and hard-working. I’ve learned a lot at NewSchool but it definitely requires full-time dedication. I spend almost all of my free time working on projects.  You definitely get what you put into it, so if you're ready and willing to commit yourself, this is definitely the place to do it.”

As for those who are dreaming of pursuing their creative passion, she says, “If this is what you want to do, go for it. NewSchool provides the tools and resources you need to prepare yourself for a career in this field. I have never worked harder than I have here—and every minute of it has been entirely worth it.”
