San Diego—January 2, 2012— A recent report by the National Endowment for the Arts (NEA) concludes that artists – a category that includes architects and designers - work in professional roles across a variety of industries, sectors and regions in the United States. The study, “Artists and Arts Workers in the United States,” builds on earlier NEA research and shares new data about the working artist, including the following highlights:
- More than half (54%) work in the private, for-profit sector; 35% are self-employed.
- One in three artists (34%) works in the professional, scientific and technical services sector, which includes architectural and design firms, advertising agencies and consulting firms, and companies offering computer or photographic services.
- Architects and designers are more likely to be foreign-born compared to others in the artists category. One in five architects (18%) speaks a language other than English at home.
- Nine in ten architects (89%) hold a bachelor’s degree or higher level of education, and seven in ten architects (70%) majored in architecture.
- New York and California have the highest numbers of resident artists in the United States. Oregon and Vermont have 20% more artists than average, with writers and authors especially prominent. Colorado, Connecticut, Hawaii, Maryland, Massachusetts, Minnesota, Nevada, New Jersey, Washington and Rhode Island also exceed the national average.
The NEA analyzed data from the U.S. Census American Community Survey to determine 11 artist occupations within a five-year data set (2005–2009). New data on employment patterns reveal more accurate totals than were previously available for this entrepreneurial group of workers.
