Industry Partnerships, Diverse Student Backgrounds Enrich Program
San Diego, Calif.-May 28, 2010-New School of Architecture and Design (NSAD) has rolled out a four-year Bachelor of Science in Construction Management degree program that will prepare well-rounded professionals to manage the myriad aspects of the construction industry.
"The future of construction management depends on well-trained women and men with total understanding of a project, from cost estimating to contract law and dozens of specialties in between," said George L. Welch, AIA, interim chair of the new NSAD Construction Management program. "NewSchool is building and driving that kind of program."
The new initiative was announced recently at the program's first industry networking event, which was co-sponsored by the San Diego office of Cumming, a corporate partner and one of the nation's largest project and cost consulting firms. Afterward, students and faculty members joined industry representatives to hear Randy Britt speak about sustainability in the modern construction environment. Britt is director of sustainability at the Los Angeles Unified School District and director of sustainability at Cumming.
"Randy's talk is the kind of exchange that enhances the learning experience for our students," said NSAD President Steve Altman, Ph.D. "Cumming and other partners, including industry associations and agencies, will refer potential advisory board members and students. In addition, their specialists will serve as adjunct faculty members on campus. Partners also will provide internships to select students and help with job searches when students earn their Bachelor of Science in Construction Management."
Welch added that he expects students to represent a range of backgrounds. "Some will come right out of high school," he said. "Some will transfer from other institutions, while others will be professionals who want to expand or update their knowledge base. When they complete the construction management degree program, they will be prepared to be industry leaders and capable of filling vital roles as they begin their professional careers."
